Friuli Venezia Giulia is an autonomous region in the north-east of Italy and borders on the region of Veneto, the countries Austria and Slovenia on the Adriatic sea. The regional capital is Trieste. In the north of the region the landscape is mountainous, the centre is slightly more hilly and the south is located at the seaside, which make it slightly flatter. With it location on the edge of the Balkan and central Europe, Friuli Venezia Giulia is a melting pot of Italian, Slavonian and German-Austrian cultures. The region is not yet discovered by mass tourism, which might be discouraged by the remote location. The region of north-east Italy is dominated by Venice, but irrespective of its beauty, the prettiest regions of the country surround this city. You will find many lakes, plains dotted with pretty cities and the spectacular Alpine mountain tops here.

The regional capital Trieste is a lively harbour town with a few nice squares like the Piazza Unità d'Italia. The Roman theatre which was excavated in the previous century and the ruins of a basilica from the same era next to the Castello di San Giusto are well worth a visit.
And of course you should not miss out on Venice!
From your holiday home in Friuli Venezia Giulia, a visit to Venice is a must. And not without reason. The city still mesmerises its visitors, even though it sinks under the surface of the water a bit more every year. The sound of the water lapping the fronts of the houses, fishing boats, the famous gondolas, narrow streets and the view of the city when you arrive by boat are what makes the city so special. Because Venice was a prosperous trade city, it has a rich artistic and cultural heritage, which is visible in its richly decorated facades, palaces and churches. If you visit the city for a day, you will probably limit yourself to the best known attractions, like the San Marco square with the Basilica de San Marco, the Doges palace and the Bridge of Sighs. And of course the many museums and palaces. But Venice most of all is a city to be experienced. Try visiting the smaller squares and the less central streets. Preferably in the low season, which will give you another, more true view of the city. A boat trip on the Canal Grande, or to the island Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore is fun too, and will give you great views on the city. Of course you will need to taste the Venetian cuisine in one of the many restaurants!
