The mountain area that surrounds the village is steep, but further east there are marked hiking trails that lead into a magnificent wilderness and high mountain area where impressive waterfalls plunge down the mountainside. Svartisen is Norway's second largest glacier with the Austerdalsbreen glacier arm as the southern part and can be experienced by following the road into Svartisdal where a boat enters the glacier. Grønligrotta is the Nordic region's most famous and visited marble cave and is well laid out with lighting, passages and stairs, a great experience for the whole family. In summer and autumn, Melfjord is a great place for picking berries and mushrooms, and the area has great terrain for small game hunting.
