The Flemish city of Ghent is an excellent place to vacation in an apartment. The magnificent city offers medieval and early modern beauty, and the surrounding area shows beautiful nature and flower fields for walking or cycling. The North Sea is almost around the corner for a day trip.
Ghent is located in the Flemish part of Belgium as the capital of the province of East Flanders. It is easy to reach by train or car (E 40, E 17). Note that the city center is mostly a pedestrian zone. Neighboring locations are Antwerp and Bruges. Brussels or the North Sea can also be easily accessed on the way back to your apartment in Ghent. Depending on the season, flower breeding around the place is marvelous.
Ghent has Celtic and Roman roots. It became young and rich in the Middle Ages, especially by trading cloth, grain, and flax. The wealthy citizens prevailed together and often donated magnificent works of art. The wealth and size of the Middle Ages can only explain the great churches of Ghent. Emperor Karl V was born in Ghent. After the decline, Ghent grew in size a second time when it became the center of Belgium's textile industrialization. Ghent and its medieval buildings survived the Second World War unexpectedly.
Enjoy the city bit by bit. You could stroll through the pretty streets from your accommodation (there is a "poetry route" in Ghent) or cycle carefully. You can visit one of the churches someday. The Sankt Bavo Cathedral has a famous remarkable altar. The 'Scheldegotic' Sankt-Niklas Church guards the grain market. A unique feature and part of the UNESCO cultural heritage Flemish Beginenhöfe are the gates Beginenhöfe, i.e., spaces of religiously motivated women's living communities. The "Belfries" protrudes over Ghent, a three-tower city. You can also walk from your apartment in Ghent to one of the many museums.
The city is also alive through its many students and culture. You can sit in a cafe and work.Film lovers can enjoy the "Internal Film Festival Van Vlaanderen-Gent" in mid-October, but the focus is on film music with the World Soundtrack Awards.
As a rule, the "Genttse Feesten" takes place in July, a bundle of smaller free festivals with the lively participation of the Ghent, most recently 16-25. July 2011.
