Flevoland

Enjoying a panoramic view and a breath of fresh air in Flevoland

Anyone who books a holiday home in Flevoland, knows one thing for sure, the vast polder - the youngest in the Netherlands - gives visitors a feeling of freedom. From the various holiday parks, you can explore nature by bike or on foot. Views stretching as far as the eye can see, with a strong breeze in the hair, a nice fresh experience that will undoubtedly make you feel better. Despite its young age, the province of Flevoland has a number of nature reserves under the management of the Forestry Commission. For example, of the Oostvaardersplassen, which recently gained great fame through the wonderful documentary 'De nieuwe wildernis' (The new wilderness), which was very popular in cinemas throughout the Netherlands. Remember, however, nature reserves often have limited accessibility and your dog often has to stay in the flat or holiday home. Please make sure about this in good time. Flevoland is committed to nature conservation, and you will benefit from this during a holiday in a bungalow or holiday park, for instance.

Flevoland's natural resources are not limited to the polder landscape. You will also come across forest areas. Head out on an early-bird walk. Who knows what kind of birds you can spot? This is highly recommended for a wonderful holiday or a weekend away in autumn or spring.

Flevoland's source is water

Don't forget the water, the origin of beautiful Flevoland. Once upon a time, this large area was part of the South Sea. The entire province of Flevoland is therefore anaverage of 5 metres below sea level. Nice to know: Flevoland comprises of the Noordoost polder and the Flevo polder, together forming the largest artificial island in the world. If you book a holiday home in Flevoland, you will enjoy its sparkling water history to the fullest. Water sports enthusiasts will find what they are looking for here, and they have three lakes with a large surface area, the peripheral lakes, and the IJsselmeer and Markermeer. You can indulge yourself and choose the best weather, with your own boat or with one of the rental boats that are offered at various locations. Take a nice dive with the kids, or go for a relaxing supper, the choice is yours. Whatever it will be, your favourite outdoor activity is always close by.

History in abundance

If you are interested in the old and recent history of Flevoland, the other museums will also be of interest to you. Plan a visit to the Bataviawerf in Lelystad, or the Pioneer Museum in Kraggenburg. You will experience the Golden Age and the hard life of the founders of Flevoland. Art lovers can visit the many small and large museums and galleries. If you are looking for cultural entertainment, the various cinemas and theatres in Almere, Lelystad and Dronten offer a wide range of contemporary entertainment.

Last but not least! Don't forget to visit the historic village of Urk. This town deserves a special place in the heart of the Flevolanders, and should be on the agenda of every visitor. Make sure you visit Urk from your holiday park or holiday home. You won't be sorry. Before the reclamation of the two polders in Flevoland, this fishing village was an island in the Zuiderzee. Or rather, no more than a hill of boulder clay. The inhabitants were - and still are - deeply connected to the water and the traditions of fishing. Urk's current fishing fleet in Flevoland is the largest in the Netherlands. Due to its isolated location, a unique culture had been created in the past, that lives on to this day. This can even be found in Urk's genetic pool. Urk is different!
