The villages of Unterwasser, Alt St. Johann and Wildhaus together form the snow paradise and skiing area of Toggenburg (top altitude of 2262 m). The resort area is around one hour from the airport and is the largest winter sports region in Eastern Switzerland. It also happens to be the home base of Simon Ammann, Olympic Gold medal winner (and former world champion) in ski jumping. Get acquainted with this varied skiing and snowboarding area from the comfort of your own chalet or holiday home. Seventeen ski lifts and 60 km of slopes (black, red, blue and yellow/freeride categories) guarantee memorable descents and a suitable run for every level of skier. Thanks to the snow cannons, you can also be sure of plenty of snow. Those who haven’t tired of skiing by nightfall can enjoy night skiing on the longest (2800 m) illuminated ski run in Eastern Switzerland in Alt St. Johann.
There is a special fun park snowboarders and freestylers at Wildhauser Freienalp. The fun park offers a variety of challenges for beginners and advanced skiers alike, from a Big Air, Rooler Jump, three small Funboxes and five Slideboxes to two Rails, a Gap-Sprung and a large Wallride.
The Toggenburg skiing area offers fun in the snow for both young and old. The villages of Unterwasser, Alt St. Johann and Wildhaus are all members of the Switzerland Family Villages association, whose goal it is to offer a quality destination for families. There is a ‘winter wonderland’ play area, nursery and ski school for children, as well as special sledding slopes, including the 3.5 km-long track from Iltios to Unterwasser. Here you can go sledding under the starry sky! Those fond of winter walking tours can enjoy the ‘Sagenweg’ trail on Alp Selamatt (reached by cable-lift from Alt St. Johann), a marked trail that takes you along various fairytale stories. The entire walk takes around 3 hours.
If you’d like to take a break from the slopes for a day, you can go on an exciting winter hike or go snowshoeing through the breathtaking Swiss winter landscape of the Toggenburg valley! There are various groomed hiking trails to choose from. You can also enjoy cross-country skiing on the countless tracks (total of 50 km) that take you through woods and across plateaus, where you can enjoy fabulous panoramic views. Or try sledding, ice skating or hockey (on the outdoor ice rink in Wildhaus), curling (Wildhaus), snowtubing or a ride on a snow scooter. Rent a winter sports chalet or holiday home in the area and enjoy all the slopes and recreational activities.
Naturally you do not need to keep busy every minute of the day. Take a break from the action with a day of relaxation in your warm, cosy winter sports chalet in Alt St. Johann, Wildhaus or Unterwasser. Read a good book on the couch, play a board game with friends or family, or enjoy the winter sun from the terrace. You can prepare all your own meals in your chalet or, if you prefer, take a trip to the village to enjoy a meal or drink with the locals. And for all those eating and drinking breaks during the day, plop down at one of the sunny panoramic terraces or charming mountain restaurants! Enjoy a relaxing winter sports holiday from the comfort of a winter sports chalet in Toggenburg!
